How I’ve Failed…And How I’m Going to Fix It

Well, first off, it's been over a week since my last post, and as a member of John Thornhill's Marketing Masterclass, this is a big no-no. I let "life" get in the way of accomplishing what I've started here, and I just can't do that.

Additionally, anyone that's been here before might have seen my post about my raw food challenge. Well, as you might be able to guess, I didn't get that started either. I have the instructions, but failed to plan out my budget to get the food. Additionally, I didn't look at my schedule to see what I had coming on the horizon. The past two weeks have probably been the busiest ever for my job, and I had a great fear of setting myself for failure during a truly stressful time.

But then on the other hand, will there ever be a magical "right" time? Have I already set myself up for failure by not following through with my plan?

I'll be honest and say I don't know the right answer. What I do know is I have a habit in my life where I set goals that I get really excited about, get about half way into whatever process I'm tackling, and then....

Nothing.

Literally, I just lose momentum, or lose interest, or start questioning myself. I become convinced that I can't do it, that I'm not good enough to accomplish it, or that I'm just going about it the wrong way entirely. This isn't quite like my previous discussion about frozen inaction, but it's closely related.

My issue is I'm afraid of both success and failure! I fear that I won't be good enough to accomplish what I'm setting out to do, and then I'm afraid of what will happen if I do succeed! It actually sounds a bit silly to admit, but the truth is I am sabatoging myself brutally.

So step number one for me is to find help. Joining John Thornhill's marketing masterclass has given me a forum of individuals working toward goals very similar to mine that can help me keep myself accountable. I'm starting by participating in a 100 comment challenge. There's nothing for me to lose in the situation, and everything to gain, so I'm hoping to see this through till the end.

I welcome any comments and suggestions, or stories of your own struggles. I'm really sure we could get quite the conversation going here! :)

  1. Hey Noelle, goodness, damned if you do and damned if you don’t, you need to get yourself out of that way of thinking, my friend. You deserve success as much as the next person, and you are definitely capable of achieving everything have thought you might like. Small steps are a good way to tackle the obstacles you put in place. Great move coming onto Masterclass, we love to take small steps to achieve our great goals!

    Enjoy the journey.

  3. I’m with Mandy and Terry on this Noelle, making big plans is just setting yourself up for failure. When Mao Tse Tung was asked how he managed to get his army to march 1,000 miles across China, he said “It began with a single step”.

My big plan is to complete the Masterclass Course, but I dropped out at lesson 10 because my short term goal is to become good at blogging. When I have cracked blogging, I will move on to article writing, and only then attempt to write an eBook.

Hope this helps to put things in perspective. ;-)

  4. Hi, Noelle, It sounds like you are doing alright to me. You haven’t quit have you?

It’s like learning to ride a bike, or drive a car…. you can’t do it, you can’t do it, you can’t do it, then you can do it.

It had better be like that because I am still battling away trying to get where I want to be. Just like everybody else.

Don’t get down on yourself, you are doing fine.

  5. Hi Noelle.
Don’t be so hard on yourself.

You can and will get there but only if you want it badly enough and from reading this post my guess is you do.

Little by little, step by step. That’s the trick.

We have all doubted our selves and we have all wanted the end result (what ever that is) right now.

Just enjoy the process and have fun too.

    Gert

Now, tell me something… How do I get this darned commentluv to work? Lol

  6. Hey Noelle,

Firstly bravo for admitting this yourself it’s the first step you can take to fixing the vicious cycle. I too have often suffered from proscrastination and I think the key is to gain momentum in what you are planning or doing and find ways to keep that momentum going just like getting into a habit and once this new plan becomes a habit it almost becomes second nature to just do it!

I wish you the best of luck. By the way you hav made a very wise decision in joins JT’s masterclass. I was a student in his 2008 class hope to see you over at the forum sometime.

  7. Hi Noelle

I’ve been where you are…scared to fail, scared to succeed.
The only person that seemed bothered by it was me…so I stopped listening to the the devils on my shoulders :)

My first year online was as hard as it gets, along side John’s Masterclass, I also took part in Ed Dale’s 30-day challenge and Mark Ling’s AfiloBlueprint…all at the same time

…and not to mention all the shiny little must haves that came along too…

What this all did for me was to teach me to take action every single day…small steps each day was the cure for me not doing anything.

These days I don’t worry about any of it…as long as I have taken that small step each day….maybe you should try it , you may surprise yourself at what you can accomplish…I know I did.

If you ever need any help just come visit.
    cheers

  8. Hi Noelle, four out of four mate: I agree with Mandy, Terry and John.

Don’t worry about success or failure my friend. You’ve got a blog online and are posting honestly, that you have done successfully! It may not be the success you crave of reaching your end goals, but it’s a step in the right direction, isn’t it. PMA my friend and you’ll get there.

Maybe you need to move the goals a little closer so as to achieve smaller targets successfully and pat yourself on the back. One hurdle out of the way and then move onto the next.

Visit my blog and read my last couple of posts, they’re aimed at helping people get moving forward.

Fairplay on stepping up to the challenge Noelle, i hope to get to know you better during it and build upon it.

Wow, thanks to everybody that has commented so far. It’s been amazingly supportive, and I know now that I made the right choice in joining John Thornhills marketing masterclass!

And in thinking about what everyone’s said, I do have to take some pride in the fact that I have this blog up. Although I’ve built many, many sites along the way, I haven’t really kept up with it like this one. Although it hasn’t made much so far, I feel really good about the fact that I did all this myself; no crappy business in a box, no shady affiliate site, but a site that I’m proud to have my name on. And for that, I have to admit that I can’t be discouraged about this accomplishment.

So again, thank you to everyone that’s commented. I look forward to getting to know more of you in the coming weeks!

  10. Hi Noelle,
Do you write out your plan the day before? I just learned that. Gonna write my one year plan and break it down into months, weeks , days and probably hours since I don’t have much time to do anything with all these kids and work!
Then I am going to post it on my wall and know why I started this in the first place!! Probably should have done that a while ago, but I guess I didn’t realize the importance of it all.
I really like what you said abut being proud to put your name on your blog. That really means a lot when someone knows they put their all into something and it makes you smile! Be PROUD, girl! Your blog is fantastic and now it’s also HONEST and transparent! That’s what we want to be, no?

    @Gert,
Just tick the Commentluv box under the comments if it’s not already done and it will bring up your last post when you put your site into the website box under your name!

    Have fun!!

    Great blog site!!

I pretty much agree with what the others have said.

I’ve spoken to people with similar issues regarding to exercise/keeping fit on my site and the simple thing I advise people do is to first set themselves a target, nothing to big but not to easy to be a waste of time. Once they’ve set themselves a target they create a plan that will help them achieve that target i.e exercise/meals/drinks.

You can use this way of thinking to achieve your goals i.e I must write 3 blog entries a week & thus must set time aside to do this.

In the end the only person who can write your blogs etc is you but the fact you’ve got your site up & running and are posting well is proof you have it in you to achieve alot more!

    Stay healthy

  12. Hello Noelle,

Good post as it’s a step to getting out of feeling down about things. First off, especially with an internet business but maybe with other things in life, its easy to get distracted. When you’re trying something new and hit a difficult part then if something else comes along you may be tempted to go off on a tangent because its easier than struggling through with the difficult task.

I spent 2 years getting distracted and probably still do to an extent, but you’re in the right place to find the help and inspiration to continue in the right direction as everyone in the Masterclass is helpful and John Thornhill and his friends are some of most helpful people around so I’m sure you’ll do fine.

An additional point. Although the masterclass has a general guideline for progress, it isn’t mandatory. The good thing about it is that you get all the material to look at whenever you want. Life often gets in the way but don’t worry about varying from the timescale, just fit in what you can when you can.

    Good luck

  13. Hey Noelle

I all can say is that I agree with all the comments above dont be too tough on yourself, the fact that you have a blog up and doing something to work towards your goals is great. Just remember to believe in yourself because you are worthy of the success that you desire, just hang in there and focus on your victories rather than things that may not be up to scratch. Dont be surprised when you end up achieving some of those elusive goals. Good luck on the journey.

  14. Noelle,
Like you, I used to let “Life” get in to my way of following my dream on the internet. My Day Job makes up a 50% of the distraction. Long hours, crazy schedule, Over Time for no reasons because of my Boss “factory mentality” in a office environment. Is so bad because most can easily take it as another “excuse” but the truth is, we spend 12 hours in that crap and take another 1-2 hour of commuting there and back home, exhausted, tired.

That 50% of distraction caused health issues not only to me but my colleagues as well. Which makes up another 30% of me having a hard time to do what I am suppose to do. That’s what I think but not really….that’s what I “used to” think.

I realize some hidden issues behind those reasons I gave….

My obsessive tendency to think thoroughly before I take action
My obsessive tendency to think make things perfect before I move
My obsessive tendency to do everything myself because I known best

Beneath my Obsessive Tendency is my useless ego if thinking I am
    smart.

Beneath my Useless Ego is my Fear…..

Fear of failure. But this Fear is trickier than I thought, because it won’t use the word FAILURE to start with…..

It comes in something like this

You can only SUCCEED if you have this, have that, add this, add that, have what this Gurus have, used that formula, blue print, tools, word press theme, that plug ins…..etc.

Get that Idea? It didn’t say Failure, It uses the word Succeed as an disguise.

    I recognize the voice now.

I replace it with something I had kept reminding myself recently and it goes like this…

    FORWARD MOTION MEANS EVERYTHING!
NO MATTER HOW SMALL THAT STEP MAY BE!
    FORWARD MOTION MEANS EVERYTHING!

    Cheers
    Jason Ser

  15. Hi Noelle,
I agree whole heartedly with all the replies previously stated. I know exactly where you are as I have (and sometimes still am) been there before. At the end of the day you only have 2 options..
Carry on trying and eventually you WILL make it or…
Quit & regret what could have been.
Working full time really does make things difficult (as I work 12+ shifts) but I am adament that I will succeed or die trying.
A sales meeting I attended years ago gave me 2 snippets I have hung onto ever since.. These are ‘Just Do It’ – If you don’t try you can’t win and ‘Reach for the stars, If you only get to the moon you have succeeded more more than most!’
Good luck with all your ventures & most importantly..ENJOY!!

  16. Hi Noelle,

Your post hits a chord on this other blogger I know…

He’s very much in the same situation very often. But “life” will always get in the way, so it might be that it’s the plans that need to have more doable, reachable, tasks that are not aware of how intrusive life can be.

  18. Hi Noelle judging by the comments you have received, your post has certainly struck a chored with many people, including me, I can very much identify with everything you have said.

As I write I am about two months behind on the masterclass course, as I started getting behind, first one week then another then another…it really started to bother me, but the reason for me getting behind is mostly to do with working on my first product, a project which is probably a bit more ambitious than you would normally expect from a ‘newbie’ but it is my flagship product I’m going to persevere until it is finished.

And one of the great things about the masterclass is the flexibility to complete the course in our own time, so when life gets in the way, or we get distracted or anything else which causes us to deviate from our course, we can pick up from where we left off and get back on track,
the important thing there though is that we do actually force ourselves to pick up from where we stopped and not just move on to something else, I used to do that and wasted nearly two years making very little progress, until I joined the masterclass and made more progress in the first two months than the previous two years!.

The most important thing for me is that I do not entertain thoughts of failure… I’m not afraid of failure because I know I will never give up my dreams, and will never stop working towards becoming a professional successful marketer, and if I wont give up then I cant fail!.

So just concentrate on what you need to do, no matter how long it takes you…getting there is whats important, not how long or by what means, I have already accepted I may well be the last person to finish this years course…but finish it I will, and coming to terms with that brings me a calmness and allows me to focus better.

This is a journey we are all on, and its a wonderful and fulfilling experience… enjoy it and be successful!.

    Best Regards
    Pete Chapman

  19. Noelle,

If I can add one thing to these comments it would be to take a few moments to determine just what it is you want out of each thing you do. Whether it is a blog post, putting up an ad on your site or commenting on another blog – what do you want readers (people reading your words) to do? That is, what is the most wanted response – MWR? The thing that a reader could do that is most valuable to you?

Is it a link to your blog, signing up for a newsletter, buying a product you recommend. See if you can clear up the MWR for each and every thing you write and publish, because …

when it is clear in your mind, it will be obvious to your readers what they should do next if what they are reading appeals to them.

Sometimes MWR goes out the window when I write content but I do make an effort to keep one thing (MWR) at the front of my mind when writing in any online space.

For example, this comment is designed to show you that I am not a flitter-bug comment author like some who write two words like “Nice post”. Rather, I tend to write enough in some comments that it could almost be turned into a post.

My MWR is for you to return the favour and visit my blog sometime soon, find a post you like and post your thoughts.

    Cheers, Michael

  22. Hi Noelle,

I totally understand the feeling you have towards success and even failure. I too was afraid of them before. But as I grow each day and even with my partner by my side, I’ve begun to feel I’ve done a great disservice to myself for not trying. At least to taste that outcome of which others are always flaunting. I think we deserve to flaunt a little bit of it for ourselves and now that you’re aware of your problem, the next part is to be accountable for what you’ve presented. I wish you success! This 100 comment challenge is on so I hope the feedback you get will be supportive enough to get you going.

  23. I don’t see it as failure Noelle. It’s a setback. That’s all. You are in good company because many successful people got to where they are today because of their “setbacks”. They learned from them and carried on to success. It’s a bit like falling off a horse. You brush yourself off and get back on the horse and carry on.

As for your raw food challenge, with my nutritionists hat on, I say that you don’t have to go the whole hog right away. Just introduce more raw food into your diet gradually. It’s a lot easier that way and less of a shock to your body. Looking forward to your updates.

Sounds so familiar to many people, especially me. Not just the maintaining focus but also success and failure. You always see people starting off at the same time galloping off in front of you. Just got to remember it’s not a race.

I have found that planning what I want to achieve in the longer term and breaking them down into shorter term plan of action has helped me maintain focus. I also only work at a task for an hour at a time, again, it helps to keep focus by keeping the mind fresh as you are not draining yourself by doing the same task for too long.

Keep it up, I am sure you will do well.

This is a great post because you are speaking what so many other’s are thinking (but too afraid to admit). It would be easy if we all had ONE thing to do in life, but unfortunately we have 1000s of things to accomplish. The more “things” we have to do, the less time we have to devote to each and it makes us feel like we’re going no where with any of them!

As long as you can devote just a few minutes a day to whatever it is you’re trying to do you are moving forward. 15 mins, 10 mins, even 5 mins – that shows commitment – commitment is the first step to achieving any goal!

When I read your post it would be so easy to change the name to my own. I have been hiding for over 3 years, doing things online but never pushing them too hard just in case something actually happened. I was comfortable in my life until this year.

Success is all relative and the key is to ignore the success of others and focus on your plan, do not measure your success by that of others or you will always be disappointed.

Set out your plans whether it is your diet or your marketing, embrace the bad days, learn from them and keep moving forward.

You can only fail if you quit, everything else is a learning experience

all the best and look backwards, see how far you have come already.

  34. Hi Noelle,

What you describe in your post is basic human nature. Most of us have these feelings. Many people are able to push past them. Admitting to yourself that fear is a problem for you is a huge step because you know have identified the problem and you can take corrective actions. 35. Hello Noelle,

I will first say that I appreciate the fact you recognize what’s going on, that in itself overcomes any “failure” you may feel. I have, and to a degree still do, vacillated over goals and achieving them. I have had plans ready to implement and then shelved them for another direction that popped up in an email subscription.

My problem is focus. I have a few projects that are in various states of completion, but can’t seem to get motivated to finish them all. I started keeping a work log for the week, one page for each project and annotate the work done on that project for the week. On Sunday I review and update the pages with priorities for the coming week. It has started to help my focus a great deal.

Take care and best of luck on your endeavors.

  37. Hi Noelle,

Your first couple of lines hit me right between the eyes…

“Life getting in the way” (…have just come out of a bout of that myself…)

Don’t beat yourself up about it, it happens to us all. Just use those obstacles as a push to achieve even more.

Ever seen the film The Waterboy.

    “YOU CAN DO IT” (…the crazy guy who’s name I can’t remember…)

You’ve done exactly the right thing and jumped straight back on the horse AND you’ve got yourself around a group of like-minded people.

THAT IS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL THINGS THAT YOU COULD HAVE DONE!

The only time I started to see any success in this business is when I ONLY CONCENTRATED ON ONE THING.

  38. Hi Noelle
There is no such thing as failure only feedback.
Not only are you giving yourself feedback here
but look at all the other people giving you all manner of useful feedback.
One way or another we are all in the same boat.
And I think that this 100 blog comment challenge
gets us all working together for a shared success.

  39. Hi Noelle,

Your post is honest and covers a problem that I think most people have had to struggle with at one time or another and that never really goes away completely.

Life gets in the way of plans sometimes. The fear of failure is understandable and it can be tackled by realizing that the road to success leads through the fields of failure.

Everybody that has ever succeeded had to pass through failures and a lot of them. There’s no shame in failing. They are all partial failures that take you closer to success as long as you pick yourself up and continue forward.

The fear of success is for the most part a fear of losing your current lifestyle that you are habituated to and of losing your friends.

Many of your current friends that you hang around with will not want to be your friends when you are a big success and perhaps you won’t feel like hanging around them either if they insist on your being exactly the way they were used to.

But many more different and successful friends will come into your life. Just realize that.

What also helps me is to be aware of the fact that goals and plans are not set in stone and should be flexible. If you didn’t accomplish something according to your schedule, do it as soon as you can.

Like Keith Purkiss said in his comment just do something towards your goal even if it’s just a 15 minute contribution.

It’s a big trap to decide to do nothing today because something came up and you can’t devote as much time to it as you originally planed. The same thing can happen tomorrow and pretty soon you’ve done nothing for a week and now feel like what’s the point.

Even 15 minutes per day for one week is much better than just putting it off altogether. It’s one hour and forty five minutes towards your goal and you’ll feel 100 times better.

I so hear you on this – I tend to be the same way! There are so many things I have talked about doing, and even started doing, and just never followed through on them. I don’t know if it’s because I don’t *really want* to do them, or if somehow I am sabotaging myself. Or maybe it’s a combination! ;)

Best of luck with your masterclass program! I hope it works out great for you. :)

I trying now to make money of futures trading, and I see how my fear is getting me down. I am so afraid of success, so unbelieving that I really can make it so that when it seemed I am on the right track I just blew it all, and now have to start from the begining.

Good luck to all of us!

  42. Hi Noelle,

I know exactly how you feel. If I can shamelessly plug, I wrote an article about it called ‘High hopes and slippery slopes’ (see my blog)
In it I talk about the high hopes we all have when starting out and how it can feel like failure when the results don’t show.

But as others said, you, I and others HAVEN’T QUIT. After all we only fail when we quit. Otherwise, we’re learning and that is very valuable.

So chin up, keep working and I’ll be here cheering you on very loudly. My neighbours will complain but I don’t care.

  43. Hi Noelle

Dont be afraid of failure. If you dont fail then you will never succeed. This is the hard truth. I’ve done countless of mistakes online. Guess what?! Almost all (99%) of the top internet marketers are failing ALL the time. They call it small tests and not failures. Because every time you test something (for example a headline, a promotion etc) some will work very well and some are not.

I am not afraid of failure BUT on the other hand I will admit that I am afraid of the success and how my life IS changing day by day (because of my online business).

Personally I believe that many people quit internet marketing not because of failing but because of they are afraid of success.

Always try to set small goals (so that you can achieve them) and every day try to set new goals and before you know it you are going to have more and more success online (without worrying about the hundreds of small and unimportant failures).

The best move you have done by now is that you asked the help of a mentor and joined John Thornhill’s Masterclass. John Thornhill will definitely give you all the help you need to succeed BUT you have also to keep in mind that its up to YOU and your mindset if you are going to be successful online or not.

    Take care,
    Andreas

  44. Hi Noelle,

We all run into problem from time to time, but you just have to push through the boundaries.

Setting goals is a good idea and sticking to them an even better one, however you must be realistic with your goals and give yourself the time to learn, plan and create. Cutting yourself short will only lead to added stress and ultimately failure.

Choose suitable times to work and stick with it. If it’s not working for you at that time, take a break and go back to it.

Get stuck in Noelle you will do fine!

  45. Well, Noelle

I can agree with all you said – major distractions, major overload and you just feel like giving it all up!

I get there quite often just now. But the way I decided to look at it is that this is supposed to be “fun” so even if you do a little a day it’s still a step along your plan.

At least you HAVE a plan! Maybe, occasionally, you can factor in some slack or allow yourself to have that extra cuppa coffee!

Just hang on in there , don’t be the “mean old boss” to yourself!

  46. Hey Noelle,

Great job setting out to make yourself better!

You said it feels silly to be afraid of both success and failure, but I understand exactly how you feel. Fear of success is something that we are all learning to cope with. Just as much as fear of failure.

I understand your frustration at setting goals that you never achieve – I’ve been doing it for years! But a few months ago I made the decision to stay focused and stop hopping from one idea to another. Hence, I’m now just selling on eBay and working on my blog.

I’ve unsubscribed from a lot of lists that I was on and have just stuck with a few who are genuinely helpful and don’t just bombard me with promotions for the latest shiny object.

John Thornhill is one of the good guys and I’m sure that if you stick with his Marketing Masterclass you’ll overcome your fears.

  50. Hi Noelle

It’s all already been said above. I’d just like to add that you only fail when you give up. If you don’t give up, you won’t fail. If you keep trying, you’ll keep achieving results. They may not be the results you want at first, but eventually they will be.

Most successful people “fail” more than unsuccessful people. They “fail” their way to success. They take ACTION and if it doesn’t work straight away, they take MORE action.

Thanks for such an honest post.

Yes; life can get in the way of a lot of us a lot of the time but don’t give up. Keep setting goals but make sure that as well as setting the large ones you also break them down into much smaller, easier to achieve, steps. I find, myself, that as long as I manage to keep taking small baby steps I reach my goals eventually even if it does take longer than planned.

Keep moving forward, even if only taking small baby steps, and you will achieve your dreams.

  56. Your post really resonates with me. I am a relatively new life coach. Every time I contact someone about referrals or mention what I do, these fears come up. Like you, I worry about being good enough. I worry about failing and, even more, about succeeding.

What has helped me is getting a coach of my own. He’s been coaching for more than 4 years, so he is new enough to understand my fears and experienced enough to help me confront them.

I think you are doing the right thing by taking part in that class. Also, I recommend finding someone in your immediate circle of friends or family who can be your cheerleader – they can ask you how things are going, celebrate your successes, give you encouragement. If you don’t have someone like that, email me. I’d be glad to help. Support is crucial for success. We all need it.

  57. Hi Noelle
Don’t be discouraged. Take it a step at a time. I’m putting myself forward probably as JT’s slowest student. I booked on to John’s 16 week coaching course in November 2008 and then as you say life, problems, bad business partners etc all got in the way.
However 21 months later I have a product up and on clickbank. For me it’s all down to baby steps – I take a bit of John’s course and break it down into small bits. I then try and achieve a little bit every day. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t.
Don’t let fear get in the way. I understand how difficult it can be to get out of one’s comfort zone and put yourself out there.
You’ll be amazed by safety net that’s out there to stop you falling.
    Good looking site!

  58. Hi Noelle
I think the challeges we all face can lead us to beleive we have let ourselfs down sometimes.
I often berate myself for not doing this or that, nowdays I try and look at it for a positve standpoint…. what have I done not what I haven’t done.
We all have larger goals but setting smaller achievable ones is the way forward for me the long term goal can seem so distant.

For example when starting a long car journey a 700 mile drive can be daunting, nowdays I look at the sat nav and note the number of miles to the next turning rather than the miles left on the whole trip. It seems to make the jouney go faster.
    All the best
    Vince

  59. Noelle:

You ahve gotten some pretty good advice in the comments.

I understand what you are going through because I have also been there with the self doubt. I found out that all it takes is that one time to break through and follow through and see the positive results and it is like a burden has been lifted.

Baby steps. We did not learn to run first. First we must learn to crawl, then stand on our own, then walk, then run, then drive (business on autopilot).

    You can do it!

Maybe you should print out these comments to help you during your times of doubt.

Since I have ventured into Internet Marketing, I have had many many moments like these and I exactly understand what you are saying. I have moved from one thing to another and still have courses worth thousands that I have not used or touched – output “Nothing”. We need to be focussed and determined to complete the task at hand – and as Eliz suggested pick up a task which you feel is very much achievable and within your reach – once you complete this you will have a feeling of accomplishment.

I can really understand where you are coming from, as I’m in a totally similar situation right now! If you look at my blog, I’ve not been blogging for a few months! Oh no…this is not what I’m supposed to be doing as a fellow student of John’s MC. I really hope this 100 Comments Challenge will force me to buck up and pick up where I left off.

Like what you’ve mentioned, it’s so easy to be hyper excited over a new idea…only to get bored and lose motivation a few weeks down the road. I guess what’s important is to have a plan and learn how to focus. Keep focusing on our goals and find a good motivating factor to keep moving and stay on the right track. Active participation in the forum helps too, as we get constant support and encouragement from fellow students.

Hang in there and you will be there someday! :)

” have a habit in my life where I set goals that I get really excited about, get about half way into whatever process I’m tackling, and then….

This has been my main problem to succeed, and not only online. I’m tired of getting about only half way. I joined Alex Jeffreys coaching program because I figured out that I needed someone to help me staying focused and move forward.

Well… I’m sorry to say that I can relate to just about all of your issues. It can be difficult, if not impossible for some of us to appreciate our own worth, over come our fears, and just keep going.

I agree with the many comments of taking things step-by-step. That works for me. When I first learned to snowboard I would get to the top of the mountain and look down believing that I could never, ever make it down the mountain. I was frozen with fear. However, staying there was not an option. So I decided not to think about the mountain – only the next turn. I focused on where I would make the next turn and just said to myself – over and over again – “It’s just a walk in the park.”

I think John Thornhills masterclass is perfectly designed for taking those little steps towards a big goal. I have learned so much in the past few months, thanks to John and his excellent course.

So let’s just go down this mountain together without worrying about what we will find when we get there. After all – we really have no idea what the outcome will be. I’m sure it will be amazing.

Every tiny little step you take towards your goal makes you a success, even if things don’t go to plan your still a success because you have learn’t what doesn’t work and what not to do to achieve your goals and as long as you keep learning and moving forward you will always be a success.

  78. Hi Noelle,

May I give you some advice?

As I see it your problems at the moment are that you are afraid of success, you are afraid to fail, you don’t follow through with your ideas and you hope for a lot in life.

Fear is always going to be with you.
To counteract fear of failure remember what Thomas A. Edison did, he invented the light bulb (among many, many other things) but he failed 10 000 times before he succeeded, failure isn’t the enemy of success, it is the predecessor. If you are to succeed you need to fail first, and learn.

Fear of success often has to do with low self-esteem and that you feel like you don’t deserve it.

Start saying to yourself every day, whenever you feel down:
“I like myself, I deserve to succeed”

I promise it will make a difference.
When I started using that technique I felt sooo stupid but it does work and now I am proud to say I LIKE MYSELF! :)

To complete your ideas I suggest you set your goals firmly, with deadlines. Thing about how great it will be when you succeed.
I have written about it on my blog, you can see it here:
    http://lookingtobusiness.com/stamina-fitness/learn-to-set-goals

Next I suggest you spend a few hours planning how to complete your goals.
My article in the 100 comment challenge, http://lookingtobusiness.com/personal-growth/how-to-make-the-very-best-of-your-chances-and-your-time , is about planning, I hope it can help you.

The only thing that is left after that is your self discipline, it will come with the confidence, but work on it daily, if you say you are going to do something, do it!
If you are going to complete your goals, spend time on them every day.

    Good luck!

What I find interesting about us humans is that we’re very similar in how we go about starting something new. Great enthusiasm, followed my general milling about – not getting anything done towards our new goal. What’s missing is structure. Until there’s a plan and a physical structure set-up to call us forth, we tend to wiggle-waggle :)

This 100 comments challenge is brilliant – even for those of us who wiggle. Look at this post for instance. Because you wrote it (created a place to capture comments), you now have 77 comments according to the number at the top of the comment list. You’re succeeding precisely because you put a structure in place.

I believe there is so much to be gained from planning a project and seeing it through to the end without the fear of whether it will be successful or a failure. The learning curve and lessons learnt will mean you have conquered business lessons that you can apply over and over again.

I wish you well and if you ever want a friendly “no catch” chat about internet marketing please get in touch.

    Kind Regards

  82. Hi Noelle,

First of all, it’s nice having you as a MasterClass member. I have not read every comment on this post, but I can relate to your situation totally!

I was in MasterClass last year and I am one of the students who had life get in my way. It really was a bad year…I lost my job, my wife had an ectopic pregnancy, we almost lost our house, etc… John’s MasterClass was not at the top of my priority list! My family and I somehow survived it all and realized that the only direction we could go was up.

I am so grateful to John for allowing his previous students to be a part of this year’s MasterClass, at no additional cost (I couldn’t afford it again). The residuals of all the life events from last year followed me into this year and I am still behind in the class.

I hope John will allow me in again next year because 3 times is supposed to be a charm. Let’s not quit, but continue to forge ahead at whatever pace we can. We will get there!

Please go to my blog and read a post which is right on topic with this post you have written. The title of the post is “I Can Achieve, I Will Achieve, I will be Successful!” I hope it helps in some way.

    All the best to you!

    Mark

That’s a fantastic way to view this – thanks for that Cheryl!

  84. Hi Noelle, you were right. You’re post did cause quite a conversation. There’s so many excellent comments from everyone. Every feeling you described I can relate to Noelle. I’m learning to absorb the good thoughts and deflect the bad ones before they get settled in and cozy. I keep taking action and I never dwell on financial issues for a minute more than they deserve. Best of luck and be well. Steve D.

  85. Noelle,

I could have written this myself. This is the exact thing I am going through myself. I can’t seem to get it going no matter what I try. I have been looking into doing internet marketing for 3 years now and nothing seems to be working for me. I am a great starter and a terrible finisher.

Like you I get all excited about a product I just bought to only give up a week later when I actually have to put in some effort. I know life is short and if I don’t something going soon I may never do it.

    Any suggestions? I’d appreciate it.

    Thanks,
    Steve

Honestly Steve, I think it has everything to do with the advice I’ve been offered in these comments. You have to acknowledge the successes you’ve had, and really reflect on the things you see as “failures.” And take action, every day. Even if it seems small, consistent action over time will surprise you with the results. I know that’s what I’ve learned from this challenge, and John Thornhill’s Marketing Masterclass in general. Don’t let your drop off of excitement keep you from taking action. It’s funny that I’ve come around full circle on this, just because of this challenge. :)

  87. Hi Noelle…
I think lots of people are afraid of success…its strange territory to them.
Fear can be an aweful tyrant…but I love that your were proactive and decided to join JT’s class.

I was in the class last year and it is the single thing that kept me focused and helped my desire stay strong.

I cannot say enough about the forum and the networking that goes on within…

Thanks and good luck to you!

  88. Hi Noelle

This is such an encouraging post. I think we all need to take more responsibility for our actions and not be so quick to blame others for our failures.

It is seem easier however to just give up when we receive a few criticism about what we want to do in life, luckily for me I am the opposite of the rule as I love to prove people wrong which is exactly what I have done with regards to my online business. We need to bear in mind that life is what and how we make it.

Thanks for sharing!Good luck with the challenge and with your business.

  89. Hi Noelle,

I think it’s all been said but I can say don’t beat yourself up over this.
Your post speaks for most of us to a greater or lesser degree.
You are here! On the Internet!
More than most people in this world have manage to achieve.

I was on John Thornhill’s coaching nearly two years ago. The things he taught are still relevant, and more to the point the lessons are still available to me!
I return frequently to jog my memory.
Take your time, move at your own speed – and enjoy!
    Good luck

  91. Hi Noelle,

I’d give some advice, but no one delays and procrastinates like me. The one thing I have going is that I never quit, so as long as something is in existence, you are on track. As to raw food, I have a friend who eats only raw, she threw out her range!!! I love eating it, but biy, way too much prep time for me.

    Good Luck,

    Mike

  92. Hi Noelle,

    Enjoy the Challenge.

  96. Hi Noelle

You are not alone, most people are afraid of success. Why?, because success means life changing circumstances and most of us are happy in our own ordered little world where we may be in the comfort zone and don’t really want to change that. Success also means committment, to your customers and readers, who will see you as an expert and look to you for advice and guidance.

But having said that Noelle, you are a success already, you have a great blog up and running! How many with ambitions to run an IM business can say that? 5% at the most I would guess.

Personally, without the Masterclass course I would still be stumbling around in the dark and certainly would have had no idea how to set up a blog and interact with other similar people. So you are headed in the right direction, you just need to stay on course.

What does it matter if it takes you ten years to achieve your goals, slowly but surely will get you there eventually.

    Just keep on keeping on.

    Regards

    Bill

  98. Hi Noelle. I think if we’re honest, we’ve ALL been there, done that at some time, and if we’re very honest, probably will again. Don’t beat yourself up.
I try one of the oldest ‘tricks’ in the book.
    1. Step away from the computer;
    2. Getta bitta paper (+ suitable scribing implement);
    3. Write a list of things you (think) you need to do – keep entries brief;
    4. QUICKLY pick one of the easier actions from the list (don’t prioritise, just pick);
    5. Do it to a satisfactory standard (avoid perfection, it doesn’t exist), just do it;

    The important bit:
    • CROSS IT OFF THE LIST;
    • NOW STEP AWAY.

Take pleasure in the fact that you’ve achieved something – you have completed a task – enjoy the moment – smile – bask in it.

Even if you had 100 tasks on the list, now you only have 99!

It really doesn’t matter if it was a small something, you’ve moved on.

The trick here is to only do ONE thing.
Take a break, make a coffee, (make love if you want to)
    BUT ENJOY YOUR ACHIEVEMENT.

Once you’ve enjoyed your success, do another one (or not, depending on your own circumstance).

You’d be surprised at the psychological effect this can have, I was.
It can become a habit, but a good habit.

Here’s a challenge and reward. When you’ve done one task of your list, come and visit. Look for the post ‘Chaos’. Oh and see if you can find Gerald.

Sorry, can’t offer to make love. I’m still a virgin, ask my children.

    See you again soon

    Alan

    PS.
There’s only one ad on my site, but -
It’s excellent, I use it myself, and it’s free!
The 5 minute video will explain, with no Opt in too.
I would get paid $3 by Google if you use it, but you could do the same. Take a look.
    Could help through Christmas too!

  102. Thanks for the post about success, what I would say that mainly we lack determination and self-respect as well.

However, we can do anything if we are determined so this is the main key to the success.

Failure is just a way to success and nothing more than this if we have learned from it.
